La mauvaise nouvelle? C'est la fin du monde. La bonne nouvelle? Les Méchants sont de retour pour le sauver! Bien sûr, ils devront « emprunter » une fusée. Et il pourrait y avoir quelque chose de dégoûtant dans l'une des combinaisons spatiales. M. Piranha a peut-être mangé trop de burritos aux haricots aussi...
Survivre à cette mission est peut-être un petit pas pour l'homme, mais c'est un grand pas pour les Méchants! |
Also this week, students started creating "une danse en ligne". They should be ready to present early next week.

Grammar
We are reviewing strategies for grammar, sentence structure, verbs in the "1er groupe" in the present tense while we have been writing and speaking. Understanding the nuances of the French language can also help when reading.
Practice of these verbs and grammar concepts will help students improve their writing and oral communication. They are reminded to use their strategies and "tricks" to help them as they communicate every day.
As always, students can bring their duo-tang's home at any time to review. Please help your child to remember to return it to school every day as we are continuing to use it in our daily activities. As well, on our COFFRE À OUTILS page students are familiar with 2 websites to help with verbs. These are 2 tools that students can use to help them practice their verbs.

My child is done their daily reading...now what?
Promoting critical thinking and having discussions after reading any text can have an impact on comprehension. While discussions about the literal happenings of a text are important, they tend to be the surface elements as they are found directly “in the text” and don’t allow for much deeper thinking from the reader. Having readers use their knowledge and experiences to make relevant connections to the text they are reading will promote a deeper understanding. When we encourage discussions that have readers look past the “surface” of a text and into its meaning or purpose they are able to make inferences, links, predictions and think critically about what they have read.
If you find yourself looking for ways to start up a conversation about what your child is reading, or wonder what kinds of questions you can ask to help your child think about what they are reading, you may find some the resources below helpful.
Please note: Even when your child is reading a French text, the discussion that happens afterwards can be in any language.

Developing more “reading is thinking” and “searching for meaning” strategies while reading and during discussions.
Using strategies to help us understand new words. Then we use the new vocabulary in our writing and activities to help us convey a clear meaning.

Les homophones a / as / à : Aide-mémoire
a and as: Are both forms of the verb "avoir", conjugated to the present tense of indicative ; "a" at the third person of singular, and "as" at the second person of singular.
Example : Il a une chemise rouge. Tu as une chemise rouge.
à : - Preposition - is a small word of connection, as of, in, by, for, on ... It indicates the place, the direction, the destination, the situation, the tendency, the possession, the time.
Example : Je vais à Barrhaven à 5 heures.
To know whether to put "a" or "à":
Tip 1: Conjugate the verb "avoir" at the imperfect tense of indicative, and check if the sentence has a meaning. If it makes sense, you have to put "a" or "as" depending on the person, otherwise you have to put "à".
Example : "Il avait une chemise rouge". The sentence continues to make sense, so we choose "a".
In the example, "Je vais à Barrhaven", if I replace "à" by "avait", which gives "Je vais avait Barrhaven", we see that the sentence does not make sense, so we must put "à".

ONLINE READING IDEAS...
The online graphic novel titled: The Wormworld Saga. Is a great read!
What is good news for us it that this graphic novel / roman graphique is available in both English & French! Students can read all the chapters in both languages or alternate between languages.
For easy access click HERE.
Another great online reading app or program is EPIC!
It is essentially a library of books that is available on most devices. If you're child is looking for more books to read this may be of interest.
If parents show an interest in EPIC, I can create a private user profile for your child and you will be able to use EPIC for free under my account. Please let me know in an email if this interests you and your child. If you prefer to sign up on your own the first month is free and then there is a fee.

Here are some books I found at Indigo that might interest students.
In class, we are...
*Reviewing basic grammar concepts (être, avoir, pluriel, singulier) and common French expressions
(J'ai fini, Ils ont faim, Tu as froid).
*Using our "Lecture attentive" strategies to help us understand texts.
*Discussing and practicing strategies to help us understand new vocabulary words in a text.
**Using Word-Attack strategies**
I am modeling and prompting students to:
-Look for Chunks in the Word
-Use the dictionary
-Ask a classmate
*Developing more “reading is thinking” strategies. Looking into our texts past the surface to discover
what lies beneath (Be attentive to details, Visualizing, Connecting the text to own knowledge, Making
connections with ideas from the text).

**Using Word-Attack strategies**
I am modeling and prompting students to:
-Look for Chunks in the Word
- Look for familiar letter chunks. They may be sound/symbols, prefixes, suffixes, endings, whole words, or base words.
- Think of a word that looks like the unfamiliar word.
- Compare the familiar word to the unfamiliar word. Decide if the familiar word is a chunk or form of the unfamiliar word.
- Use the known word in the sentence to see if it makes sense. If so, the meanings of the two words are close enough for understanding.
- Read the sentence more than once.
- Think about what word might make sense in the sentence. Try the word and see if the sentence makes sense.
- Read past the unfamiliar word and look for clues.
- If the word is repeated, compare the second sentence to the first. What word might make sense in both?
- Think about what you know about the subject of the book, paragraph, or sentence.
- Do you know anything that might make sense in the sentence? Read the sentence with the word to see if it makes sense.
-Use the dictionary
-Ask a classmate

Thank you to all parents who came to meet our teaching team last Thursday! It is always a proud and meaningful experience when children get to share their learning space and hard work with their loved ones. We look forward to working together this year.
HOMEWORK!
The most important "homework" your child can do is READ! Setting aside time for reading in both FRENCH & ENGLISH will have a positive impact on your child's learning.
"Kids who read 65 minutes a day during a school year see 4.3 MILLION words. That’s worth thinking about!
And kids who read about 10 minutes a day see only about 600,000 words in a year. No comparison with 4.3 MILLION".
REMINDER:
Cross-Country team members will be at Baxter Conservation Area on THURSDAY for the regional meet. Please be sure to send them dressed appropriately and ready for this event. They are outside all day.

This year, students will be writing book critics in lieu of the traditional "book report". We are reading Les méchants in class and I will be using this book to model how to write a book critic.
Les méchants:
They sound like bad guys, they look like bad guys... and they even smell like bad guys. But Mr. Wolf, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Snake, and Mr. Shark are about to change all of that... Mr. Wolf has a daring plan for the Bad Guys' first good mission. They are going to break two hundred dogs out of the Maximum Security City Dog Pound. Will Operation Dog Pound go smoothly? Will the Bad Guys become the Good Guys? And will Mr. Snake please stop swallowing Mr. Piranha?!

La gestion de temps
Students and I had a class discussion regarding time management. What does it look like in the classroom; why is this important for our learning. Here is our anchor chart we created.

Voici our Terry Fox Difference Maker Shoes
We have a few magiciens in the classroom :)
October 2
This week, we discussed and practiced "La lecture attentive" as a strategy to help us understand texts. We read a text about Terry Fox, and drew a "difference maker" shoe inspired by Terry while watching a movie about this Canadian hero. Our school total for the Terry Fox foundation is 3178$. Bravo!

Grade 5 students started their first Science unit "Les forces". You can find documents in the 5e section of our website. I encourage students to read these documents to help review material. It is important for students to understand the concepts as well as to communicate their understanding using specific science vocabulary (verbally and in their writing).
Grade 4 students started their first Social Studies unit "Le Canada". We are learning our Canadian provinces and capitals. You can find documents in the 4e section of our website. Students need to locate each province/territory on a map of Canada. We will review mapping skills then we will take a closer look at our beautiful province: l'Ontario.
French Reading: We will be practicing the strategy of Inferring using pictures. Students will be:
Observing Details in Pictures;
Describing Details in Pictures;
and Making Inferences about Details in Pictures.
Inferring helps readers comprehend text at a deeper level. Instead of staying on the surface, inferring allows readers to think deeper and activate what they know to make meaning. Inferring requires us to use context clues, prior knowledge and analytical skills.
Take a look at the picture below. Use your context clues and prior knowledge to make sense of what you see. What is happening?
If you guessed this baseball team just won an important game, you're right! What did you use to figure this out? Maybe it was the happy look on the players' faces, or the way they're jumping around, or maybe even the hugging. Even if you don't follow baseball you probably understand enough about celebrations to put the pieces of this puzzle together.

September 25
Wave the Franco-Ontarian Flag
September 25 is "La Journée franco-ontarienne". It was on this day in 1975 that the Franco-Ontarian flag was raised for the first time at the Laurentian University in Sudbury. This day promotes the recognition of the francophone communities in Ontario, their culture and history. Here are two songs we read/ sang and discussed in class.

This week, students practiced and are becoming more familiar with Google docs and how they can use it along with some other programs to help improve their writing (Extension: Read and Write and Add-on: Easy Accents). In writing, we are looking at sentence construction (what is a noun, a verb, adjectives, pronouns, articles). Students are also reminded that they must begin sentences with capital letters and end with appropriate punctuation.
In Reading, we discussed the criteria on how to answer comprehension questions and how to read a text "La lecture attentive".
Our classroom library is up and running both in French and English. Students have a variety of books they can choose from.

Our hard working Berrigan School Council is preparing for our very popular lunch programs. If you are available to volunteer to help with the lunch programs, we would greatly appreciate it. Without our fantastic volunteers, we would not be able to offer this popular program. To inquire about volunteering, please email [email protected]
Save the date! The Berrigan Council is planning our annual Community BBQ/Meet the Teacher on Thursday, September 28. The Community BBQ will run from 5:45pm-8pm. We will have our classrooms open from 4:30pm to 5:30pm for a very informal meet and greet. Come and check out our learning environment! Mme Rainville and Mrs Tinley will be in room #238, so please be sure to drop by!
The Ottawa Public Library and Tumblebooks
Tumblebooks is a free online resource that is available through the Ottawa Public Library (OPL).
To access TUMBLEBOOKS follow this link to the OPL website. You will need your Library ID number which is found on your library card as well as your online login password. Tumblebooks can help students in French because they are reading and listening and to a text simultaneously. This will help with pronunciation, decoding and speaking skills. The OPL also has a vast selection of French literature for children. The library at Walter Baker is well stocked with French choices!
Library & Reading at home
Students sign out 3 books; 1 French, 1 English and the 3rd is their choice. Students are to bring their books back each week. If they are not done their book they still need to bring it back and renew it. They are encouraged to read every day in both French & English. If students finish their library books before our weekly visit they can always borrow books from our classroom library or check out some online books. Our "Coffre à outils" page is our "Learning Toolbox". On this page students can find links to different sites that can serve as helpful learning tools.
Computer Typing Skills
I often use Chrome books in the classroom for writing assignments. Students will be taught how to log in and access documents. I have created a Google Classroom where I can post assignments for our students. This is a great tool as students can access these assignments at home through their Google Account. Typing skills...I encourage students to practice their typing skills at home. Please visit our "Coffre outils" for some typing web sites.

Agendas
Each student has been given a Berrigan agenda planner.
Homework
I understand that families lead busy lives with extracurricular activities and that it is important to have a healthy balance in life. The most important "homework" your child can do is READ! Setting aside time for reading in both FRENCH & ENGLISH will have a positive impact on your child's learning. Occasionally, students may anticipate a short task or activity. Some projects may require extra work to be done at home as well as at school. All information for these projects will be updated on the website for easy reference, as well as in the agenda. These homework tasks should leave plenty of time for extracurricular activities that your family enjoys and also support the learning happening at school.
Library
I encouraged all my students to visit the Ottawa Public Library and take out French books. Our class have library Mondays with Mrs Tinley.
Physical Education
Students are asked to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for indoor Physical Education, and to dress for the weather for outdoor physical education. I encourage students to bring a reusable water bottle to keep at school for frequent drinks to be returned home frequently for washing.
Toys in the classroom
Please ensure that toys are enjoyed at home and not brought into the classroom as they tend to be a distraction for learning and productivity.
How to reach me
Open communication between home and school is important. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any comments, questions or concerns. The best way to reach me is to email me at [email protected] or to write a note in your child's agenda.
To facilitate communication, please consult our class website on a weekly basis. You will find homework, assignment explanations, important dates and messages. This saves paper as well as eliminating the risk of notes being lost "in transit".
I look forward to sharing a dynamic and productive year with your child.
